Save

The Save command writes all changes to the current project file, preserving your work without changing the file location. This is the primary method for protecting your work during a session.

How Save Works

When you click Save:

  1. All project content (volumes, masks, surfaces, meshes, measurements, settings) is written to the current project file
  2. The recent files list updates to reflect the save operation
  3. The project modified indicator clears

If the project has never been saved (displays as "Untitled"), Volvicon prompts you for a filename and location—effectively performing a Save As operation.

Workflow: Saving Your Project

  1. Click File to open the backstage
  2. Select Save from the navigation panel
  3. If the project has a filename, changes are saved immediately
  4. If the project is untitled, a file dialog prompts you for a name and location

Alternatively, use the keyboard shortcut (typically Ctrl+S) or the Save button in the Quick Access Toolbar.

When to Save

Develop a habit of saving at key points during your workflow:

SituationReason
After importing new dataPreserve the import before processing
After completing segmentation stepsProtect time-intensive work
Before running long computationsCreate a checkpoint for recovery
After creating measurementsPreserve analysis results
Before applying experimental operationsAllow easy rollback if needed
After modifying project propertiesEnsure metadata changes persist
tip

Frequent saves protect against data loss from application crashes, power outages, or accidental closure. Consider saving after every significant operation.

Auto-Save

Volvicon can automatically save your project at regular intervals. Configure auto-save in PreferencesGeneralPerformance:

  • Auto save frequency: Set the interval in minutes (0 disables auto-save)

Auto-save writes to the current project file. For untitled projects, auto-save is not active until you perform an initial manual save.

note

Auto-save occurs only when the project has unsaved changes. If no modifications have been made since the last save, auto-save does not write to disk.

Project Compression

Volvicon project files can be compressed to reduce disk space usage. Configure compression in PreferencesGeneralPerformance:

LevelDescription
StoreNo compression; fastest save/load times
FastestLight compression; minimal save time impact
BalancedModerate compression; balance between size and speed
MaximumHighest compression; smallest files but slower saves

Choose based on your priorities: storage efficiency vs. save/load performance.

Save Behavior with Large Projects

For projects containing large volumes or numerous objects:

  • Save operations may take several seconds
  • A progress indicator may appear during the save
  • Avoid starting other operations until the save completes
warning

Do not close Volvicon or shut down your computer during a save operation. Interrupting a save can corrupt the project file.

Troubleshooting

Save Fails with Permission Error

  • Verify you have write access to the project file location
  • Check if the file is open in another application
  • Ensure the disk is not full

Save Takes Unusually Long

  • Large volumes or high triangle-count surfaces increase save time
  • Consider using a lower compression level for faster saves
  • Verify the storage device is functioning normally

Project Shows Modified After Save

  • Some operations may trigger additional changes during save
  • Try saving again to clear the modified indicator
  • If persistent, check for background processes modifying project data

  • Save As - Save to a new location or with a different name
  • Preferences - Configure auto-save and compression settings
  • Properties - View project file size and content information
