Record Video
The Record Video dialog captures screen recordings of Volvicon views. Use this feature to create animations for presentations, training materials, quality documentation, or sharing analysis workflows with collaborators.
Dialog Overview
The Record Video dialog provides:
- Target Selection: Choose what to record (application, layout, 3D view, or 2D views)
- Animation Controls: Configure automatic rotation or slice scrolling
- Quality Settings: Select video resolution and frame rate
- Output Path: Specify the destination file
- Recording Controls: Start, pause, and stop recording
Recording Targets
Select what portion of the application to capture:
| Target | Description |
|---|---|
| Application | The entire Volvicon application window |
| Scene Layout | The current multi-view layout panel |
| 3D View | The active 3D render view only |
| Sagittal/Right | Sagittal slice view with slice scrolling animation |
| Coronal/Front | Coronal slice view with slice scrolling animation |
| Axial/Top | Axial slice view with slice scrolling animation |
Target labels may vary based on the scene orientation type (Medical vs. Engineering conventions).
Animation Options
Each target type offers specific animation capabilities:
Application and Layout Recording
For application and layout targets:
| Option | Description |
|---|---|
| 3D View Rotation | Automatically rotate the 3D view during recording |
| Rotation Direction | Pitch, Roll, or Yaw |
| Angle per Frame | Degrees to rotate per captured frame |
| Reverse | Reverse the rotation direction |
| Slice Scrolling | Scroll through slices in visible 2D views |
| Slice Range | Minimum and maximum slice indices |
| Reverse | Scroll from max to min instead of min to max |
3D View Recording
For 3D view target:
| Option | Description |
|---|---|
| Enable Rotation | Toggle automatic 3D rotation |
| Rotation Direction | Pitch (vertical), Roll (tilt), Yaw (horizontal) |
| Angle per Frame | Rotation speed in degrees |
| Reverse | Reverse rotation direction |
2D View Recording (Sagittal, Coronal, Axial)
For 2D slice view targets:
| Option | Description |
|---|---|
| Enable Slice Scrolling | Toggle automatic slice navigation |
| Min Slice | Starting slice index |
| Max Slice | Ending slice index |
| Reverse | Scroll from max to min |
Video Quality Settings
| Setting | Options | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Quality | Auto, Native, UHD 4K, Full HD, HD, SD, Low | Output resolution preset |
| FPS | 1–240 | Frames per second |
Quality Presets
| Preset | Resolution | Use Case |
|---|---|---|
| Auto | Automatic selection | General purpose |
| Native | Match current view size | Best quality for the view |
| UHD 4K | 3840 × 2160 | High-resolution displays, large presentations |
| Full HD | 1920 × 1080 | Standard HD output |
| HD | 1280 × 720 | Web sharing, smaller files |
| SD | 720 × 480 | Legacy compatibility |
| Low | 640 × 480 | Smallest file size |
For smooth playback, match the FPS to your target player's expected rate (typically 30 fps for presentations, 60 fps for smooth animation).
Additional Options
| Option | Description |
|---|---|
| Record Mouse Cursor | Include the mouse pointer in the recording |
Enable cursor recording when creating tutorials or demonstrating interactive workflows.
Recording Controls
| Control | Action |
|---|---|
| Record | Start capturing frames |
| Pause | Temporarily pause recording |
| Stop | End recording and finalize the video file |
Workflow: Recording a Rotating 3D View
- Set up the 3D view with the desired camera angle and visible objects
- Open File → Record Video
- Select 3D View as the target
- Enable 3D View Rotation
- Choose rotation direction (e.g., Yaw for horizontal spin)
- Set Angle per Frame (e.g., 1–3 degrees for smooth rotation)
- Set Quality to Full HD and FPS to 30
- Click Browse to select the output file location
- Click Record to start
- Wait for a complete rotation (or desired duration)
- Click Stop to finalize the video
Workflow: Recording a Slice Scroll-Through
- Load the volume and adjust window/level as desired
- Open File → Record Video
- Select the slice view target (e.g., Axial/Top)
- Enable Slice Scrolling
- Set Min Slice to 0 and Max Slice to the last slice
- Choose whether to Reverse the scroll direction
- Set Quality and FPS
- Specify the output path
- Click Record to start
- Recording automatically progresses through slices
- Click Stop when complete
Workflow: Recording Application Workflow
- Prepare the application state for the starting point
- Open File → Record Video
- Select Application as the target
- Enable Record Mouse Cursor if demonstrating interactions
- Optionally configure 3D rotation or slice scrolling if applicable
- Click Record
- Perform the workflow actions you want to capture
- Click Pause if you need to set up the next step
- Click Stop when finished
Output Format
Videos are encoded using H.264 codec and saved as:
- MP4: Modern, widely compatible format
- AVI: Alternative container format
The output maintains aspect ratio when resizing to the selected quality preset.
Best Practices
Before Recording
- Set up the view: Position camera, adjust visibility, configure window/level
- Close unnecessary dialogs: Keep the recording area clean
- Verify disk space: High-quality recordings can produce large files
- Test with a short recording: Verify settings before long captures
During Recording
- Minimize interruptions: Avoid opening dialogs or switching applications
- Use pause strategically: Pause to set up next steps in tutorials
- Monitor progress: Watch the recording to catch issues early
After Recording
- Verify the output: Play the video to confirm quality and content
- Trim if needed: Use external video editing software for refinement
- Compress for sharing: Consider transcoding for web or email sharing
Troubleshooting
Video File Is Very Large
- Lower the quality preset
- Reduce FPS for slower animations
- Shorten the recording duration
Recording Is Choppy or Drops Frames
- Lower the quality preset to reduce processing load
- Close other applications to free system resources
- Reduce the complexity of the visible scene
Animation Speed Is Too Fast or Slow
- Adjust the Angle per Frame for rotations
- Adjust FPS to change overall playback speed
Output Path Cannot Be Written
- Verify write permissions for the output folder
- Check available disk space
- Ensure the filename is valid
