System Requirements
This page specifies the minimum and recommended hardware and software requirements for running Volvicon. Verify that your system meets these requirements before installing. For installation instructions, see Installation.

Operating System

Only 64-bit (x86-64) operating systems are supported. 32-bit systems and ARM-based processors are not supported.
Windows 10 introduced Per-Monitor DPI scaling (version 1703 and later), which Volvicon requires for correct high-DPI rendering on multi-monitor setups. Windows 11 is also fully supported.

Multi-core processors improve performance during segmentation, mesh generation, and batch processing.

The required memory depends on dataset size:
- Free memory should be at least twice the size of the loaded dataset.
- For 16-bit datasets:
Dataset Size (GB) = (Width × Height × Slices × 2) / 1,073,741,824 - Multiple datasets loaded simultaneously require proportionally more memory.
Examples:
- 512³ voxel dataset (16-bit): ~256 MB → Minimum 512 MB free RAM
- 1024³ voxel dataset (16-bit): ~2 GB → Minimum 4 GB free RAM
- 2048³ voxel dataset (16-bit): ~16 GB → Minimum 32 GB free RAM
Graphics Card

- Integrated graphics (onboard GPU) are not supported.
- Install the latest graphics drivers from the GPU manufacturer.
- On Windows, use WHQL-certified drivers.
A recent NVIDIA GPU additionally enables optional CUDA acceleration for compute-heavy operations such as CT (cone beam) reconstruction. It is not required — the application automatically falls back to the CPU when GPU acceleration is unavailable, so reconstruction works on any system.

If the GPU or driver is unsupported, the File → Preferences → General → Performance → "GPU acceleration (NVIDIA CUDA)" option is disabled and its tooltip explains why (for example, that the installed driver is too old); the same reason is written to the application log. Standard 3D rendering uses OpenGL on any supported GPU (NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel) and is unaffected by this setting.
Display

When using display scaling above 100%, the effective resolution must still meet the minimum requirement. For example, at 150% scaling, a physical resolution of 2880 × 1620 is required to achieve the equivalent of a 1920 × 1080 working space.

Ensure sufficient free space in the temporary files directory. Volvicon displays a warning if less than 1 GB of free space is available.
Input Devices
- Mouse: A 3-button mouse with scroll wheel is required for full interaction.
- Keyboard: Standard keyboard for shortcuts and data entry.
Network Requirements

For floating licenses, verify DNS resolution, TLS certificate trust, proxy behavior, firewall rules, and a synchronized system clock before deployment. Customers do not install a local Volvicon license-server application.

AI Assistant Local Support
Local AI Support is optional. It allows the AI Assistant to use downloaded AI models on the same computer instead of sending requests to an online AI provider.

Local AI can run without a supported NVIDIA GPU on some systems, but responses may be slow. For routine AI Assistant use, a modern NVIDIA GPU with current drivers is recommended.
If you do not install Local AI Support, you can still use the AI Assistant with an online AI provider, subject to your license, account, and network access.
Virtual Machines
Virtual machines are not supported. Volvicon must run on a physical machine. GPU passthrough in virtualized environments is not guaranteed to function correctly and is not a supported configuration.
Cybersecurity
Deploy Volvicon within a hardware and network environment that incorporates appropriate security controls:
- Antivirus software with real-time protection enabled
- Properly configured host and network firewall
- Regular operating system and driver security updates
- Network segmentation for systems that process sensitive or proprietary data
- Workstation access restricted via a strong password or other authentication mechanism
- Workstation should not be left unattended while a session is active; lock the screen when stepping away
High-Performance Configuration
The following hardware configuration has been validated with Volvicon and delivers a measurable performance improvement in compute-intensive workflows such as volumetric segmentation, mesh generation, and large-dataset visualization. Systems meeting or exceeding this specification are recommended for demanding production use.
This configuration represents tested hardware on which Volvicon has been validated. Equivalent components from other manufacturers may also yield comparable performance gains.

Troubleshooting
